We’re replacing all of the flooring at Casa1404 soon. Very soon.
I’ve been waiting for this day for FIVE years. FIVE!!! I should be thrilled. Elated. But, all I can think about is, ”Are we getting ripped off?” and ”Is this what I REALLY want?”
I’ve plotted and planned. Frieze in the cozy spaces and walnut laminate in the common spaces. We have three teenagers and two dogs, right?
But when it come right down to it, I’d like to get a little more creative. I’d love to paint my office floor bright yellow and stencil some amazingly original pattern.
Or install chevron hardwood throughout our first floor. Beautiful and bumpy. And beautiful. Pretty sure I’d end up with a shiner! I’m more than clumsy!
I could take an SOS pad and vinegar to some 2x4s. This rustic gorgeousness just makes my heart skip a beat. Really?

What to do? Help me out!

i am a huge fan of the herringbone wood floors- so chic yet still rustic!
LOVE all these flooring ideas. Seriously thinking about doing like the last pic on my stairway. Gorgeous!
Have you considered iron buff? Im not sure if that is what you were referring to with the vinegar and sos pad line, but if you take 0000 steel wool, and put in a container full of white vinegar and let it sit for 1-3 weeks until the acids in the vinegar dissolve the wool and leave you basically with a tea of dissolved iron oxide, then strain and wash it onto raw wood floor (Oak works best) you will get a chemical reaction with the tanin in the wood and the iron oxide in the solution. It will blacken the wood and you will get varying shades from board to board depending on the tanin content in each. It will range from grey to blue to black on oak. If you google iron buff floor, you should come across details and images of it. Also theres nothing to say you cant leave it raw and just let it wear. I also have a good friend who lives in this amazing home here in nj. they have all reclaimed wood floors that were either salvaged or original to the barns on their land, and they have never put any finish on them. and they have 2 kids and dogs. they just let them do what they are going to do. you can actually see shots of the floors in the home in the images on my website above under the habitat book 1 section. Hope that helps. I myself am going to be attacking my floors in this old firehouse I just bought which has the original heart pine and oak floors that are all beat up from 130 years of abuse, but i am going to leave them with the original character and not make them perfect. I may even lightly sand them or scrape them and leave them raw, or do iron buff, or possibly tung oil….after i get all of the paint , adhesive and lineoleum off of them.
