Sunny’s Aqua Buffet

My favorite recent makeover is a buffet we custom painted for a sweet customer at As Time Goes By. Sunny (love that name) bought several cute, shabby things from our friend Kris. One of them was this gorgeous antique buffet.

She really liked an off-white buffet we had in the store, but wanted a fun color for her media console. Won’t this look great in her new home with her zebra rug?

Sunny has great taste and I can’t wait to see how it all comes together!

  3. Wow! Gorgeous transformation. I adore the colors you chose. The antique finish. The amazing lines of the piece! Your newest follower:)

  4. Kris says:

I’m so happy with how “our” piece turned out. The buffet had such charachter we all knew it would be beautiful. I’m glad we convinced Sunny how the aqua would be perfect for her space. I truly hope she posts pics… and of the other items she bought from us at As Time Goes By.

    Thanks for posting pics!!

You’re so right! Beautiful buffet to begin with. Brian had fun painting it, I had a BLAST distressing and glazing it. The BEST part for me will be seeing the complete room!

  5. Valerie says:

Love it also! Did you change the color on the hardware? We have an old peice we are refinishing but I hate the current color of the hardware. Replacing it is not easy.

Also is that chalk paint finish?

    • amanda says:

Thanks Valerie! It’s a Benjamin Moore latex. We really believe in the durability of good quality latex paint for “high traffic” furniture. We use ASCP on accent pieces because it’s a fun paint to use. But, we ALWAYS use Annie Sloan soft wax for protection. It’s so durable and beautiful with no yellowing. Our hardware is almost always original hardware updated with Krylon primer and oil-rubbed-bronze spray paint. Gives a nice contrast and lasts! Please email me if you have any other questions!

  6. Lisa says:

GORGEOUS! I bet it would have been so pretty in white too but the aqua is so unconventional and lovely! Nice job!

  7. Joanne says:

Love the color – can you share what color BM paint you used???

    • amanda says:

Thanks Joanne! It’s a custom mix based on Valspar’s Lyndhurst Duchess Blue. I believe the closest Ben Moore color is Wythe Blue. Happy painting!

  8. Kenzie says:

I have been searching for a piece like this FOREVER. Can’t wait until I find one!!

  9. Paula says:

I am in love with it.
Maybe one day, I’ll have one of my own and I can stop fawning all over anyone who has one of these beauties, AND paints it in aqua.

    It’s divine!! A gorgeous makeover.

  18. Laura says:

Love the aqua color. I love painting a detailed buffet. It is fun to watch all of that detail pop out during the sanding a glazing process. Well done!

I so love this color. It is just the perfect shade of antique aqua for your antique buffet. Just gorgeous, thanks for sharing! -K

  25. Lolly Jane says:

This is stunning. I saw this on Pinterest and it caught my eye because I recently turned my great-grandmother’s 100 year old buffet into a media console as well. Mustard yellow and left the top alone but they’re pretty darn similar.

I love this! So goregous! (: Kelli

  27. Cynthia says:

Love, love the aqua color!! I have a buffet that resembles the one you have painted. I am inspired!! Thank you for sharing your tips and hints!!

  28. Loved the color. Did you use Annie Sloan clear or dark wax or mixed the two together? Did you use the Valspar or Benjamin Moore aqua? I use Annie Sloan dark wax, but use Crysral Clear Wax with imported Carnauba. It is wonderful and is just 12.00 a can. Mixes real good with Annei Sloan dark wax. It is by .F. Staples & Co. Inc. Great stuff. Thought you might like to know. I have not tried their dark wax as yet. You did a beautiful job on the chest. Found your blog on Miss Mustard Seed. Thanks for sharing & I will be following your blog.

We use Benjamin Moore exclusively now. LOVE the paint! Glazed with Valspar “Asphaltum” glaze from Lowe’s and waxed with Annie clear wax. I love Annie Sloan products and use them for certain projects. Props to you for mastering the dark wax!

  29. Love love love that credenza. I want to know just how you can “see” the final piece when you are considering buying it? Can this talent be learned?

LOL! Don’t know. We started out just painting furniture for our own home in our own eclectic style. We surprise OURSELVES a lot! Just have fun! If it doesn’t work out, it’s only paint. Try, try again.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Loved reading your 15 “Q”s and “A”s!

  30. Annie Schuelke says:

I’ve just recently purchased an antique buffet that looks very much like the one you have redone here. I went to search aqua blue buffets and came across this blog. I have a darker aqua color in mind, but here’s my struggle. The piece looks so fabulous just as it is that I can’t bring myself to paint it!! I absolutely love to redecorate and purchased it (for $60 off Craigslist!!) with the intention of painting it and using it as a kitchen island…replacing the top and creating a breakfast bar area on one side. But…it’s so cool the way it is that I decided to put it against my kitchen wall instead and…I just need someone to give me the courage to PAINT IT!!!! Any words of encouragement to get me over the hurdle?

    Thank you!
    Annie
